ITHEMBA SHACK INNOVATIONS
In the South African language Xhosa,
the word "Ithemba" means "Hope".
Dave & Joylynn started "Ithemba Shack Innovations" in 2009 after seeing vulnerable women with children living in the poorest of conditions in the township of Masiphumelele in Cape Town, South Africa. Dave began training and employing young men from Masi how to build safe 3x3 meter weatherproof shacks. At that time, this community was already overpopulated with 25,000 people who were living in poverty and looking for work. Today, there is an estimated 45,000 people living in Masi and it continues to grow. Their living conditions have gone from desperate need to hopelessness as there is nowhere to live.
About a year ago, Dave had a stirring in his heart: "How can we provide better shacks with no land?" The answer: The only way is up! After assessing the needs of existing shacks, a plan was made.
The panels are made ahead of time and are ready to be delivered. Dave and his crew start construction as the family moves their belongings to the street. In the remaining daylight hours, the old shack is strengthened and repaired and a second story is added. The family is ready to move back in by the end of the day! On day two, the team adds stairs, ties up all the loose ends, and celebrates by giving thanks to God for a restored hope and future through the gift of a new home.

TAKE ACTION NOW
It only costs $800 to build a better shack for an entire family in Masiphumelele.
Our goal is to raise $40,000 in 2019. This will allow us to build 1 new shack a week and will create more valuable jobs within our building team.
